Heald Green Flower Show 20th August, St Catherine’s Church Hall
Posted August 24th, 2011 by Mike Savage
This was an excellent Show a ‘Real Event.’ We continued where we left off last year. Our entries and exhibitor numbers were high swollen by new faces in the Young Person’s classes.
We maintained recent high standards. Ken McDean once again took the ‘Best in Show’ with a vase of 5 chrysanthemums.
John Woods returned after a long absence and won the Banksian Medal for taking the most prize money in the horticultural classes which included his great vegetables.
Roy Davis took prizes for his fuchsias but he didn’t have it all his own way as A Dalton won the Bronze Medal.
Bob Davies did well in the Flower classes especially with his roses. The dahlia trophies were won by Mr C Heathcote and Mike Savage
Linda Vann won prizes in a wide variety of classes and took the Ratepayer and Members’ Trophies. Liz Thomson won with her flowers and carried off the Myers Trophy. J Potts took the Bill Owen trophy and the best novice prize went to P Hughes. Maureen Oatway’s 3 hydrangea heads won her the Sid Broadhurst Trophy.
Prize winning leeks gained K V Knowels the Vegetable Society Medal.
The Best Domestic Award went to Mike Holloway for his Victoria sandwich.
There was something for everyone with a good domestic section, lots of photographs in new classes with Best Photo taken by Jane Vowels.
The children’s sections were split into two groups depending on age. Dominic and Josie Jones did particularly well.
The deputy mayor of Stockport presented the prizes and local councillors, Peter Burns and Adrian Nottingham were present for the afternoon.
We hope to welcome all this years guests and more to next year’s Show which will be our 70th at the same venue 18th August 2012.
